Artesunate

Antimalarial


Severe malaria caused by P. falciparum
IV:
Less than 20 kg: 3 mg/kg then repeated in 12, 24, and 48h.
20 kg or more: 2.4 mg/kg then repeated in 12, 24, and 48h.
Patients who meet criteria for severe malaria should receive a minimum of 3 doses before switching to oral follow-on therapy.

CBC to be done q week for 4 weeks following dose to monitor for artesunate associated hemolysis. Accessible through Special Access Program
