GENERAL PEDIATRICS DRUG INFORMATION
Atropine
Vagolytic/Anticholinergic
Sialorrhea SL: 1-2 drops Q6H, increased to Q4H if needed
Watch for anticholinergic side effects (Dilated pupils, dry mouth, urinary retention, flushed skin, fever, excessive doses – tachycardia)
Availability: For sublingual use, supplied as 1% ophthalmic drops (pharmacy can prepare 0.25% and 0.5% as needed).
Pharmacology: Anticholinergic -- competitive inhibitor of acetylcholine on muscarinic receptors (exocrine glands, smooth and cardiac muscle). Increased heart rate -- may see bradycardia initially after slow injection, then tachycardia.
