Corticosteroid


Acute asthma
PO:
1-2 mg/kg (usual maximum: 50 mg/dose) Q24H

Anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressive
PO:
0.5-2 mg/kg (usual maximum: 50 mg/dose) Q24H

1 mg prednisone = 1 mg prednisolone.
Discontinuation of therapy >10-14 days requires gradual tapering. Consider supplemental steroids at times of stress if patient has received long-term or frequent bursts of steroid therapy. Prolonged weakness may occur when corticosteroids are used concurrently with non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents.

Availability:
Prednisone is 5 mg/mL compounded as liquid in hospital and 1, 5, and 50 mg tablets.
Prednisolone is 1 mg/mL and commercially available.
