GENERAL PEDIATRICS DRUG INFORMATION


Acetaminophen

Analgesic and antipyretic


Pain or fever
PO:
10-15 mg/kg (maximum: 4 g/day) (usual maximum: 75 mg/kg/day) Q4-6H PRN or Scheduled

PR:
10-20 mg/kg (maximum: 4 g/day) (usual maximum: 75 mg/kg/day) Q4-6H PRN or Scheduled

Give doses as needed or scheduled.

Administration: For rectal doses less than 80 mg, can administer acetaminophen 80 mg/mL drops rectally.

Pharmacology: Inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins. Reduces fever by direct effect on heat regulating centres to increase dissipation of body heat -Inhibits action of pyrogens on these centres. Blocks pain impulse generation in peripheral nervous system.
