GENERAL PEDIATRICS DRUG INFORMATION
Amoxicillin
Antibiotic
Acute otitis media - targeting Streptococcus pneumoniae (including empiric therapy) PO: 80 - 90 mg/kg/DAY (usual maximum: 3 g/DAY) divided BID or: 45 - 60 mg/kg/DAY (usual maximum: 3 g/DAY) divided TID
Community-acquired pneumonia - targeting Streptococcus pneumoniae (including empiric therapy) PO: Standard dose: 45 - 50 mg/kg/DAY (usual maximum: 3 g/DAY) divided TID High dose: 80 - 90 mg/kg/DAY (usual maximum: 3 g/DAY) divided TID Consider high dose for patients that are unimmunized, have risk factors for penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae, or present with invasive or complicated infection.
Group A strep pharyngitis PO: 50 mg/kg (maximum: 1 000 mg/dose) daily for 10 days or: 25 mg/kg (maximum: 500 mg/dose) BID for 10 days
Prophylaxis in asplenia PO: 10 mg/kg (maximum: 250 mg/dose) BID
Other infections PO: 40 - 50 mg/kg/DAY divided TID
Pharmacology: Penicillin derivative antibiotic
Broad spectrum penicillin with bactericidal activity. Inhibits penicillin-binding proteins, preventing peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell walls – this causes cell lysis.
